Founded in January 2022, Figure's founder, Brett Adcock, has been touted as the "next Musk". He is a serial entrepreneur who founded AI headhunter Vettery, which was acquired by the Adecco Group for $110 million in 2018, before founding electric airline Archer and leaving in 2022 to found Figure.

The company received support from Microsoft and OpenAI, among others, in its early days, and within a year had built, integrated, and tested an alpha prototype of the "Figure 01" autonomous humanoid robot.On August 6, 2024, Figure launched the " Figure 02" humanoid robot, which is equipped with six cameras in the head, front and back drive stem, and a visual language model that enables the robot to quickly perform common-sense reasoning as well as semantic localization.
